Restic + rclone: finally a backup setup I trust

2026-09-14

For years my backups were a cron job with rsync and a lot of hope. This summer I switched to restic with an rclone backend pointing at cheap object storage. Snapshots are deduplicated and encrypted, and pruning keeps the bill small.

The important part was actually testing restores. I now run a monthly restore of a random directory into a scratch folder and diff it against the source.
